It seems like only yesterday I met my very good friend for life, Fiona Pullen, founder of The Sewing Directory at the trade show over 11 years ago.  I clearly remember at the time a so call IT expert saying the Sewing Directory would never work. Now 11 years later having grown to the point of attracting over 1 million visitors a year The Sewing Directory has made it through to the finals of the Great British Entrepreneur Awards in their pivot entrepreneur category. This category is for businesses that have had to make a change of direction because of Covid.

When many of the businesses on their online directory of sewing shops and sewing schools closed in March 2020, Fiona Pullen and Julie Briggs – owners of The Sewing Directory – knew they had to adapt fast if they were to make it through this crisis. Within months they started building a whole new website which focused on sewing shops who sell online, and those who teach sewing and quilting courses online, to help crafters continue to keep stitching throughout the lockdowns and beyond. The new site launched on the 5th of January 2021.

‘’We knew there were many people spending a lot of time at home who either wanted to build their skills, or learn new sewing skills to help pass time and reduce the stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic’’ says Fiona Pullen.

Now, even if you aren’t comfortable visiting shops or spending hours at workshops with other people whilst Covid is still spreading, by using The Sewing Directory you can shop and take sewing courses from the comfort of your own home. Plus, there are hundreds of free sewing patterns, projects and technique guides to be found on the site too.
